Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and occasionally muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It helps brighten tired-looking eyes, enhance symmetry, and achieve a naturally refreshed, youthful appearance.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It can refresh tired-looking eyes, improve symmetry, and create a natural, rejuvenated appearance.

Beyond aesthetics, blepharoplasty can improve vision by clearing the field of view, reducing the need to lift the eyebrows, and minimizing forehead wrinkles caused by this. Many patients feel more confident and appear several years younger without altering the face’s overall character.

Ageing eyelids often develop a hooded appearance in the upper lids and bags in the lower lids due to loose skin and bulging fat. Blepharoplasty addresses these issues, enhancing the appearance of the eyes and surrounding areas.

The surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic with sedation in a day-case setting, allowing patients to leave shortly afterward while receiving thorough aftercare. It can also be combined with other procedures such as a brow lift, facelift, or skin resurfacing.

What are the benefits of Blepharoplasty?

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, removes excess skin and fat around the eyes to create a more youthful and alert appearance. Beyond improving aesthetics, it offers several key benefits:

Rejuvenated Appearance: Restores a fresher, more youthful look by reducing sagging eyelids and excess skin.

Improved Vision: Lifts upper eyelids that may obstruct the visual field, enhancing peripheral sight.

Elimination of Under-Eye Bags: Smooths under-eye contours by removing or repositioning excess fat.

Long-Lasting Results: Provides structural improvements that endure for many years, unlike temporary cosmetic fixes.

Boosted Confidence: Enhances self-esteem and emotional wellbeing by improving the appearance of a prominent facial feature.

Together, these benefits make blepharoplasty a highly effective procedure for both functional and cosmetic improvements. Patients often leave feeling not only more youthful and refreshed but also more confident in their everyday lives.

Who is Suitable for Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is suitable for adults over 30 who are in good overall health and have no serious eye conditions. Before surgery, it’s important to discuss any medical issues with your surgeon.

Good candidates should consider the following:

Eye Health: Conditions like glaucoma, dry eyes, or a detached retina may affect suitability.

Medical Conditions: Thyroid disorders, cardiovascular issues, high blood pressure, or diabetes should be disclosed.

Realistic Expectation: The surgery can refresh the eyes and improve symmetry but won’t dramatically alter facial structure.

Facial Awareness: Understanding your natural features and asymmetries helps set achievable goals for the procedure.

By reviewing these factors with your surgeon, you can determine if blepharoplasty is right for you.

Instructions on discharge

  • Hypromellose artificial tear eye drops to be used throughout the day every 4 hours or whenever necessary for 2 weeks.
  • Chloramphenicol eye ointment to be put into the eye at night for 2 weeks.
  • Washing of the face is allowed but be gentle around the eyes where the tapes are as they help to hold the stitches in place. The tapes need to stay in place until the first dressing check.
  • Ice compress to the eyes for 2 days.
  • TED stockings to be worn for 2 weeks.
  • Sleep with head slightly elevated and avoid bending the head down.
  • Discharge with standard painkillers.

Dressings Clinic

  • Usually about a week after the surgery when the sutures around the eyes are removed and another tape applied to the outer scars which can be removed at the end of the second week.

Activities

  • No restrictions but avoid strenuous activities for about the first 2 weeks.

Wound Care for First 3 Months

  • Moisturise all scars for at least 3 months.
  • Makeup can be applied after the second week.
  • Avoid direct sunlight for the first 3 months.

Results

Many people who undergo blepharoplasty report feeling more confident and refreshed, often noticing a younger, more rested appearance. While results can be long-lasting for some, natural ageing may cause eyelids to droop again over time.

Bruising and swelling typically improve within 10 to 14 days, while surgical scars may take several months to fade. Protecting the delicate eyelid skin from sun exposure is important during the healing process.

Blepharoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Blepharoplasty surgery

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the upper or lower eyelids. It can improve both the appearance and function of the eyelids.

Who is a good candidate for blepharoplasty?

Good candidates are adults in general good health with drooping or puffy eyelids that affect appearance or vision. Ideal candidates have realistic expectations about the outcomes.

How long does blepharoplasty take to recover?

Most bruising and swelling reduce within 10 to 14 days. Full healing and scar fading can take several months, and following aftercare instructions helps achieve the best results.

Will blepharoplasty make me look younger?

Yes, many patients report a more refreshed and youthful appearance, as the procedure removes droopy skin and reduces puffiness. However, it doesn’t stop natural ageing.

Are the results of blepharoplasty permanent?

Results can be long-lasting, but natural ageing may cause the eyelids to sag again over time. Some patients may need revision surgery in the future.

Is blepharoplasty painful?

Most patients experience mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising after surgery. Pain is usually manageable with prescribed medication, and most people return to normal activities within 1–2 weeks.

Are there any risks or side effects?

As with any surgery, blepharoplasty carries risks such as infection, scarring, dry eyes, or temporary blurred vision. Choosing a qualified surgeon and following aftercare instructions can minimise complications.

How can I protect my eyelids after surgery?

Protect your healing eyelid skin from sun exposure, avoid strenuous activity in the early recovery period, and follow your surgeon’s advice on cleaning and applying ointments to support optimal healing.

"

I was very concerned about my breast implant removal and the shape I would be left with. I opted for a removal and an uplift. I love the look of my breasts after the operation. They have a great shape and I feel so confident about my new look. I was also concerned about the scarring but that seems to be fading relatively quickly. An amazing surgeon he put me at ease throughout and I wish I had done this sooner. If I were to have further surgery I would go back to Andrej.

"

I am incredibly pleased with the outstanding care and expertise Maria Chasapi has brought to my surgery. From the initial consultation to the final follow-up, her professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail were second to none. She took the time to understand my goals, explained every step with clarity, and made me feel completely at ease throughout the process. The results have exceeded my expectations—not just aesthetically, but in how confident and comfortable I now feel.

"

Mr Salibi listened to my concerns, he explained the procedure in great detail and answered my list of questions. His persona, his calmess, his reassurance left me feeling at ease and I was so eager to have my tummy tuck after years of hiding my body under smocks and over shirts. I am now six weeks post op and cannot stop smiling... My scar is so neat, so perfect and is healing exceptionally well. My body confidence has returned and I cannot thank My Salibi enough for working his magic.
