Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty, or labia reduction, is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reduces the size of the labia to improve comfort and appearance. It can be performed on the labia minora or labia majora and is different from vaginoplasty, which tightens the vaginal canal.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty, also known as labia reduction, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape or reduce the size of the labia to improve comfort, appearance, and confidence.

It most commonly involves reducing the labia minora, the inner folds of skin on either side of the vaginal opening, although it can also be performed on the labia majora, the outer folds that surround and protect the inner labia.

Labiaplasty focuses on changing the size or shape of the labia and is different from vaginoplasty, which is a separate procedure used to tighten or reconstruct the vaginal canal.

What Happens During Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is usually performed under general or local anaesthetic and takes around 1 to 2 hours. The surgeon carefully removes excess tissue and reshapes the labia before closing the area with dissolvable stitches.

Could Labiaplasty Be the Right Choice for You?

There are several personal and physical reasons why someone may consider labiaplasty. The procedure can address both functional concerns and cosmetic preferences, depending on your individual needs. Common reasons include:

Discomfort or pain caused by enlarged or asymmetrical labia during exercise, sexual activity, or when wearing tight clothing

Post-childbirth changes, including stretching, tearing, or asymmetry that affects shape or volume

Age-related changes such as sagging or loss of elasticity

Hygiene concerns due to excess tissue, which may increase irritation or infection risk

Appearance and self-confidence, particularly if you feel self-conscious about size or symmetry

It’s important to remember that labia naturally vary in size, shape, and colour, and there is no single definition of “normal.” Choosing labiaplasty is a personal decision, usually based on comfort, confidence, and your own aesthetic preferences.

What Are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty can provide both physical and emotional benefits, depending on your individual concerns and goals. Key benefits may include:

Reduced discomfort or pain, particularly during exercise, sexual activity, or when wearing tight clothing

Improved sexual confidence and comfort, as removing excess tissue can enhance ease and enjoyment during intimacy

Enhanced appearance and symmetry, especially following childbirth or natural ageing changes

Boosted self-esteem and overall quality of life, as many people feel more confident in their bodies

Improved hygiene, since reducing excess tissue can make personal care easier and lower the risk of irritation or infection

Labiaplasty Recovery and Aftercare

Healing Timeline

  • Most people heal relatively quickly, with minor pain, swelling, and discomfort during the first few weeks.
  • Pain relief will be prescribed as needed, and swelling typically settles within 2–3 weeks.
  • You should take about one week off work, return to normal daily activities after two weeks, light exercise such as jogging after four weeks, and full activity after six weeks.

Instructions on Discharge

  • Use Hibiscrub liquid soap to gently wash the area after toilet visits for the first 2 weeks.
  • Apply Polyfax ointment and wear a sanitary pad to protect the wound for 2 weeks.
  • Wear close-fitting underwear to ensure the pad stays in contact with the wound.
  • After 2 weeks, stop Hibiscrub and Polyfax. Dissolvable stitches may cause some itching; if this continues, Sudocrem can be applied.

Follow-Up

  • You will have a follow-up appointment about 1 week after surgery to inspect the wounds and change dressings.
  • Another follow-up occurs after 3 months to assess the results of your surgery.

Activities

  • Gentle movement is encouraged soon after surgery to aid recovery.
  • Avoid strenuous activities such as swimming for the first 2 weeks.
  • Other daily activities can usually be resumed after 2 weeks, depending on comfort and your surgeon’s advice.

This plan helps ensure proper healing, minimise swelling, and support the best long-term results.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reduces the size of the labia minora or labia majora to improve comfort, appearance, and confidence. It is different from vaginoplasty, which focuses on tightening or reconstructing the vaginal canal.

Who is a good candidate for labiaplasty?

Good candidates are adults in general good health who experience discomfort, hygiene issues, or self-consciousness due to enlarged or asymmetrical labia. Candidates should have realistic expectations and a stable weight.

How is labiaplasty performed?

Labiaplasty is usually done under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic with sedation. The surgeon carefully removes or reshapes excess tissue, then closes the area with dissolvable stitches. The procedure typically takes 1–2 hours.

How long is recovery after labiaplasty?

Most patients heal quickly, with minor swelling and discomfort for the first few weeks. Normal activities can usually resume after 2 weeks, light exercise after 4 weeks, and full activity after 6 weeks. Follow-up appointments are scheduled at 1 week and 3 months post-surgery.

Benefits include reduced discomfort during exercise or intercourse, improved sexual confidence, enhanced appearance and symmetry, easier hygiene, and increased self-esteem.

"

I was very concerned about my breast implant removal and the shape I would be left with. I opted for a removal and an uplift. I love the look of my breasts after the operation. They have a great shape and I feel so confident about my new look. I was also concerned about the scarring but that seems to be fading relatively quickly. An amazing surgeon he put me at ease throughout and I wish I had done this sooner. If I were to have further surgery I would go back to Andrej.

"

I am incredibly pleased with the outstanding care and expertise Maria Chasapi has brought to my surgery. From the initial consultation to the final follow-up, her professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail were second to none. She took the time to understand my goals, explained every step with clarity, and made me feel completely at ease throughout the process. The results have exceeded my expectations—not just aesthetically, but in how confident and comfortable I now feel.

"

Mr Salibi listened to my concerns, he explained the procedure in great detail and answered my list of questions. His persona, his calmess, his reassurance left me feeling at ease and I was so eager to have my tummy tuck after years of hiding my body under smocks and over shirts. I am now six weeks post op and cannot stop smiling... My scar is so neat, so perfect and is healing exceptionally well. My body confidence has returned and I cannot thank My Salibi enough for working his magic.
