What is Breast Implant Removal/Replacement Surgery?

Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure to take out existing implants, while replacement involves removing old implants and inserting new ones, which can match or change the size, shape, and material.

These procedures are done for medical or cosmetic reasons, often after 10–15 years due to issues like capsular contracture, displacement, or changes in breast shape causing unevenness.

Natural changes from pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging, or weight fluctuations can also affect breast appearance, so removal or replacement is often combined with lifts or re-augmentation to achieve the desired look.

Overall, these procedures allow women to reassess and enhance their breasts, with re-augmentation being a popular option for increasing size and restoring balance.

Benefits of Breast Implant Removal or Replacement

Breast implant removal or replacement offers several advantages, helping women achieve a more comfortable, balanced, and natural look.

Improved shape, size, and position: Restores a more natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Relief from complications: Removing the capsule can relieve pain and issues like capsular contracture.

Better fit for your body: New implants can be tailored to suit your body type and proportions.

High-quality implants: Replacement allows for the use of modern, durable implants.

Old implants removed or replaced: Ensures safety and addresses age-related changes in breast implants.

These benefits make the procedure both functional and cosmetic, enhancing comfort, confidence, and overall breast appearance.

Breast Implant Removal/Replacement Options:

Breast Implant Removal: The implants are removed and not replaced, leaving the breasts smaller. Additional surgery is optional if you want to restore shape or volume.

Breast Implant Replacement (Reaugmentation): Old implants are removed and replaced with new ones. You can choose to maintain a similar size and shape or adjust the implant profile to enhance your breasts’ appearance.

Breast Implant Removal with Uplift (Mastopexy): Implants are removed and a breast lift is performed to restore a natural, lifted shape. This is ideal if your breast tissue has stretched due to aging, weight changes, pregnancy, or large implants.

Breast Implant Replacement with Uplift (Reaugmentation Mastopexy): Implants are replaced while lifting the breasts into a more youthful position. This option maintains or enhances volume while correcting sagging caused by aging, weight changes, or pregnancy.

Your surgeon will guide you on the best option for your requirements and desires during your consultation.

Breast Implant Removal/Replacement Aftercare & Recovery

Instructions on discharge

After surgery, wear a compression garment (sports bra style) over the dressings day and night for the first two weeks. You may take gentle showers, patting the dressings dry, and follow your surgeon’s guidance on prescribed painkillers and antibiotics.

Dressings Clinic

Return for a review approximately one week after surgery to have the tape under the breasts removed. After this appointment, the wound can get wet, allowing gentle showers. Bathing can usually resume from the third week onward.

Activities

Avoid strenuous activities for the first two weeks to support proper healing.

Scar Care for the First 3 Months

Apply micropore tape to the scars for at least three months or until fully healed. The tape can remain on during showers or baths and should only be removed when it becomes loose. After this period, moisturise the scar and surrounding breast skin to maintain healthy tissue and improve appearance.

Breast Implant Removal/Replacement Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about breast implant removal/replacement surgery

What is breast implant removal?

Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure to take out existing breast implants. It may be done for medical reasons, implant complications, or personal preference. After removal, breasts may appear smaller or deflated, and additional procedures may be considered to restore shape.

What is breast implant replacement (re-augmentation)?

Breast implant replacement involves removing old implants and replacing them with new ones. You can choose to maintain the same size and type or adjust the size, shape, or profile to achieve your desired look. Replacement can also help correct implant-related complications such as capsular contracture or implant rupture.

Can breast implant removal be combined with a breast lift?

Yes, combining implant removal with a mastopexy (breast lift) helps restore a natural, lifted shape, especially if the breasts have sagged due to implant removal, aging, pregnancy, or weight changes. This procedure reshapes the breast while removing the implant.

Can breast implant replacement be combined with a breast lift?

Yes, a breast implant replacement with mastopexy (re-augmentation lift) allows patients to maintain or increase breast volume while lifting and reshaping sagging breasts for a youthful, balanced appearance.

How long do recovery and post-operative care take?

Recovery varies, but patients generally wear a compression garment for 2–4 weeks, avoid strenuous activity for the first 2 weeks, and follow scar care instructions for up to 3 months. Follow-up appointments ensure proper healing and implant positioning.

What are the benefits of breast implant removal or replacement?

Benefits include improved breast shape, size, and symmetry; removal of old or damaged implants; better-fitting implants for your body type; relief from complications such as capsular contracture; and an opportunity to combine with a lift for enhanced contour.

Are there risks associated with these procedures?

Risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, and, for replacements, implant rupture or displacement. Combining with a lift may slightly increase recovery time, but careful surgical planning minimises complications.

How do I know which procedure is right for me?

A consultation with a qualified cosmetic surgeon helps determine the best approach based on breast shape, implant condition, skin elasticity, and personal goals. Your surgeon can recommend removal only, replacement, or combining with a mastopexy for optimal results.

Patient Reviews

"

I was very concerned about my breast implant removal and the shape I would be left with. I opted for a removal and an uplift. I love the look of my breasts after the operation. They have a great shape and I feel so confident about my new look. I was also concerned about the scarring but that seems to be fading relatively quickly. An amazing surgeon he put me at ease throughout and I wish I had done this sooner. If I were to have further surgery I would go back to Andrej.

"

I am incredibly pleased with the outstanding care and expertise Maria Chasapi has brought to my surgery. From the initial consultation to the final follow-up, her professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail were second to none. She took the time to understand my goals, explained every step with clarity, and made me feel completely at ease throughout the process. The results have exceeded my expectations—not just aesthetically, but in how confident and comfortable I now feel.

"

Mr Salibi listened to my concerns, he explained the procedure in great detail and answered my list of questions. His persona, his calmess, his reassurance left me feeling at ease and I was so eager to have my tummy tuck after years of hiding my body under smocks and over shirts. I am now six weeks post op and cannot stop smiling... My scar is so neat, so perfect and is healing exceptionally well. My body confidence has returned and I cannot thank My Salibi enough for working his magic.
