Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of the nose. People may choose rhinoplasty to enhance the overall appearance of their nose, correct asymmetry, or achieve a more balanced facial profile. It can also be performed to improve breathing by addressing structural issues such as a deviated septum.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose. It may be performed for cosmetic reasons, to improve the appearance of the nose, for functional reasons, to improve breathing, or for a combination of both.

The nose is made up of bone in the upper portion and cartilage in the lower portion, and rhinoplasty can modify the bone, cartilage, skin, or all three depending on the desired outcome. Your surgeon will consider your overall facial features, the thickness and quality of your nasal skin, and the specific changes you want to achieve when planning the procedure.

A personalized surgical plan is created for each patient, and in some cases, part or all of the procedure may be covered by insurance, particularly if it is performed to correct breathing problems or congenital issues.

Rhinoplasty can address a variety of concerns, including altering the size, shape, or proportions of the nose, correcting deformities from injury, repairing birth defects, and improving airflow to help with breathing difficulties.

What are the benefits of a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty offers both cosmetic and functional improvements, helping patients achieve a more balanced appearance while addressing breathing or structural concerns. Key benefits include:

Enhanced Appearance: Improves the shape, size, and proportion of the nose to better complement your facial features.

Improved Breathing: Corrects structural issues such as a deviated septum, helping to reduce nasal obstruction and improve airflow.

Corrects Injuries or Birth Defects: Repairs deformities caused by trauma or congenital conditions for a more natural look and function.

Boosts Self-Confidence: Many patients feel more confident and satisfied with their appearance after surgery.

Long-Lasting Results: Provides permanent improvements to the nose’s structure and appearance, with results that can last a lifetime.

Who is Suitable for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a popular cosmetic procedure in the UK, helping patients improve the appearance and function of their nose. However, not everyone is a suitable candidate, and it’s important to understand the factors that determine suitability.

Patients typically considered suitable for rhinoplasty:

Completed Nasal Growth: The nose should have reached its adult size, usually around 16 for girls and 17–18 for boys.

Realistic Expectations: Candidates should understand what rhinoplasty can and cannot achieve and have clear goals for the outcome.

Good Health: Being in overall good health supports safer surgery and a smoother recovery.

Patience for Recovery: Candidates should be prepared for swelling, redness, and mild discomfort as the nose heals over several weeks.

Being aware of these factors helps ensure the best results and a safe, successful procedure.

Rhinoplasty Recovery and Aftercare

Initial Recovery After Rhinoplasty

  • After your rhinoplasty procedure, a small splint will be placed over the bridge of your nose to support its new shape and protect it during healing. This splint is typically worn for 7 to 10 days and will be removed at your follow-up appointment, where you’ll receive further aftercare guidance from your surgeon.
  • Most patients take around 10 days off work to rest and recover. Bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes are normal during this stage and will gradually subside over the following weeks.

What to Expect in the First Few Weeks

Recovery times vary depending on the individual and the extent of the surgery. During the first few weeks, it’s important to take things slowly and allow your body time to heal.
To protect your results and avoid complications:

  • Do not blow your nose for at least two weeks after surgery.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or bending down, as this can increase swelling or pressure.
  • Skip exertive exercise and sports for at least three months to allow proper internal healing.

Your surgeon will provide specific aftercare instructions to ensure your recovery remains smooth and comfortable.

Tips to Reduce Swelling and Support Healing

Taking small steps to care for yourself can make a big difference to your recovery.
To help reduce swelling and promote healing, you should:

  • Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights to minimise fluid buildup.
  • Take warm baths instead of showers while your bandages and splint are in place.
  • Avoid expressive facial movements, such as wide smiles or laughter, which may strain the healing tissues.
  • Steer clear of dusty or smoky environments, as these can irritate your nasal passages and trigger sneezing.
  • Brush your teeth gently and limit upper lip movement to avoid unnecessary pressure on your nose.

Results

Even small adjustments to the structure of your nose, sometimes just a few millimeters, can have a significant impact on its appearance. In most cases, an experienced surgeon can achieve results that satisfy both you and the surgeon.

However, there are times when the initial changes may not fully meet expectations, and a second procedure may be recommended. If a revision is needed, it is important to wait at least a year, as the nose continues to settle and change during the healing process.

Rhinoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Rhinoplasty surgery

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to improve appearance, correct deformities, or enhance breathing function.

Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Good candidates are adults whose noses have finished growing, are in overall good health, and have realistic expectations about the results. Rhinoplasty can address cosmetic concerns, injuries, or breathing problems.

How long does rhinoplasty surgery take?

Rhinoplasty usually takes between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on whether it is cosmetic, functional, or a combination of both.

What is the recovery time after rhinoplasty?

Initial recovery typically takes 1–2 weeks, with most swelling and bruising improving within this period. Full healing and final results can take up to a year as the nose continues to settle.

Are rhinoplasty results permanent?

Yes, rhinoplasty results are generally long-lasting. Minor changes may occur over time due to ageing, but the structural improvements to the nose are permanent.

Will rhinoplasty improve my breathing?

Rhinoplasty can correct structural issues such as a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or nasal valve problems, improving airflow and breathing function.

Are there visible scars after rhinoplasty?

Incisions are usually placed inside the nostrils or along the natural contours of the nose, making scars discreet and virtually unnoticeable once healed.

Can rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, rhinoplasty is often performed alongside other facial surgeries such as chin augmentation, facelift, or eyelid surgery for a more balanced and harmonious appearance.

"

I was very concerned about my breast implant removal and the shape I would be left with. I opted for a removal and an uplift. I love the look of my breasts after the operation. They have a great shape and I feel so confident about my new look. I was also concerned about the scarring but that seems to be fading relatively quickly. An amazing surgeon he put me at ease throughout and I wish I had done this sooner. If I were to have further surgery I would go back to Andrej.

I am incredibly pleased with the outstanding care and expertise Maria Chasapi has brought to my surgery. From the initial consultation to the final follow-up, her professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail were second to none. She took the time to understand my goals, explained every step with clarity, and made me feel completely at ease throughout the process. The results have exceeded my expectations—not just aesthetically, but in how confident and comfortable I now feel.

Mr Salibi listened to my concerns, he explained the procedure in great detail and answered my list of questions. His persona, his calmess, his reassurance left me feeling at ease and I was so eager to have my tummy tuck after years of hiding my body under smocks and over shirts. I am now six weeks post op and cannot stop smiling... My scar is so neat, so perfect and is healing exceptionally well. My body confidence has returned and I cannot thank My Salibi enough for working his magic.
